The Big Issue: A Magazine with a Mission !

The Big Issue is not just a magazine; it's a movement. Founded in 1991 by John Bird and Gordon Roddick, it was created as a response to the increasing numbers of homeless people in London. Inspired by New York's "Street News," the magazine aimed to provide homeless individuals with a means to earn a legitimate income by selling the publication on the streets. The Body Shop provided the initial funding, and the magazine quickly became a symbol of social enterprise and empowerment .

Empowering Vendors, Changing Lives.

The Big Issue operates on a unique business model: vendors purchase the magazine for £2.00 and sell it for £4, keeping the difference.£2.50 Cost To Vendor , £5.00 To Customer at Christmas. This approach not only provides vendors with a source of income but also fosters a sense of dignity and purpose. Since its inception, the magazine has sold over 220 million copies, helping vendors earn more than £144 million collectively .

A Platform for Social Change.

Beyond providing employment opportunities, The Big Issue serves as a platform for discussing pressing social issues. The magazine covers topics such as poverty, housing, health, and addiction, often featuring stories from vendors themselves. This editorial focus not only informs readers but also amplifies the voices of those who are often marginalised in mainstream media.

Celebrating Milestones and Innovation.

In 2021, The Big Issue celebrated its 30th anniversary with a complete redesign of the magazine. Led by editor Paul McNamee and renowned graphic designer Matt Willey, the new design aimed to make the magazine more visually striking and reader-friendly. The redesign included bold cover designs, increased use of photography, and new sections highlighting global change makers and achievements within The Big Issue community.

A Global Impact.

The Big Issue's influence extends beyond the UK. There are now more than 100 street papers inspired by The Big Issue in 35 countries, published in 25 languages with a combined readership of 4.6 million.
