Life in 8K: My Cataract Surgery Journey at 60

A Journey Through Cataract Surgery and Back: My Rare Recovery Story

A Journey Through Cataract Surgery and Back: My Rare Recovery Story

Seven weeks ago, I faced something most people never think about: cataract surgery complications. While cataract operations are generally safe, I experienced a very rare set of challenges — including phaco burn and corneal folds — complications that put me in roughly 0.01% of cases worldwide.

At first, it was frightening. My vision was unstable, my eyes were sensitive, and even simple daily tasks felt impossible. For seven weeks, I couldn’t sell the Big Issue — something that’s not just my livelihood, but my connection to the community. Being away from the pitch made me feel like the town itself was missing a piece of its life.

But with careful adherence to my eye drops, strict protective measures, and following my doctors’ guidance, I started seeing progress. My right eye, operated on first, recovered to nearly perfect vision, and today, seven weeks after my left eye surgery and stitch removal, I’ve made remarkable progress — even faster than the typical eight-week recovery window.

The good news is that resilience matters as much as medicine. Even with complications, I’m back on the road to full vision. My night vision has improved, my prescription has dropped, and the cornea is settling. I’ve learned to adapt, protect my eyes, and trust the healing process.

Now, as I prepare to return to work, I carry more than my 4,000 business cards — I carry a story of perseverance. I want people to know: even when things go wrong in ways you can’t predict, recovery is possible, and life goes on.

If there’s one message I want to share, it’s this: take your healing seriously, protect yourself, and don’t underestimate the human capacity to recover — even from the rarest complications.

I’m back. My vision is coming back. And my place on the pitch, helping my community, is coming back too.
