Life in 8K: My Cataract Surgery Journey at 60

Summary of My Cataract Surgery Complications and Current Situation

I am providing this written update to explain why I am currently unable to work or attend long phone appointments.

Medical history

  • 26 June 2025 – First cataract surgery (routine, 10 minutes). Successful.

  • 9 August 2025 – Second cataract surgery. This procedure lasted 40 minutes instead of the normal 10. It resulted in several complications:

    • Phaco burn (damage to the cornea from the surgical probe).

    • Corneal folds (wrinkling of the cornea, causing distorted vision).

    • Three stitches in the cornea to seal the wound. These stitches have altered the cornea’s shape, causing astigmatism and further distortion.

Current impact

  • Vision is blurred and distorted. Straight lines appear bent, reading is difficult, and screens are challenging to use for long periods.

  • Recovery is painful and slow. I am still under medical advice to rest the eye and avoid environments with dust, wind, or bright light.

  • I cannot safely work outdoors (e.g., selling The Big Issue) or travel through construction areas.

  • I cannot reasonably take part in a 60-minute phone call, as concentration, eye strain, and fatigue make it unmanageable.

Request

I ask that DWP and the Jobcentre recognise these medical complications and recovery challenges. I am doing my best to keep records updated and to explain my situation clearly. At present, I need understanding and flexibility in place of lengthy phone appointments.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
