πŸ’Š Blog Post 6: Lansoprazole – Preventing Heartburn That Masquerades as Angina

The Silent Confuser: Why Acid Reflux Can Be Dangerous

When you have a serious heart condition like LVSD (EF 20%) and Angina, every ache, pain, or discomfort in the chest sends your mind into emergency mode. One of the most common—and dangerous—confusions in diagnosis is the similarity between severe acid reflux (heartburn) and an actual angina attack or heart attack.

This is why Lansoprazole (a Proton Pump Inhibitor, or PPI) is a vital part of my 11-medication regimen, even though it doesn't directly treat my heart failure.

What Lansoprazole Does: Stopping the Mimic

Lansoprazole's job is simple: it drastically reduces the amount of acid produced in my stomach.

  • Preventing the Pain: By lowering stomach acid, it prevents acid reflux (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD), which causes a burning sensation often felt right behind the breastbone—the exact location where angina pain occurs.

  • Clarity of Symptoms: Taking Lansoprazole daily ensures that if I experience chest pain, I can be more confident that it is not simple heartburn. This allows me and my medical team to assess any new chest pain with the seriousness it deserves—as potential Angina that requires my GTN spray or a 999 call.

  • Protecting the Stomach: My body is dealing with 10 other powerful medications, including those for fluid management and blood thinning (Apixaban). Many of these drugs can be harsh on the stomach lining. Lansoprazole acts as a shield, preventing irritation and potential bleeding in my GI tract.

⚠️ The Risk of Misdiagnosis is Life-Saving Awareness

The risk of confusing heartburn with a heart event is real. I have to be careful not to dismiss any chest pain just because "I have acid reflux."

If I were not taking Lansoprazole, I might risk:

  • Over-Calling: Calling 999 for what is only acid indigestion (a waste of emergency resources).

  • Under-Calling (The Real Danger): Mistaking a genuine, life-threatening angina attack for "just heartburn," leading to a delay in using my GTN spray or calling the ambulance.

By keeping acid under control, Lansoprazole helps me and my specialist nurse manage my symptoms with much greater clarity.

If you have a heart condition, always discuss stomach issues and acid reflux with your doctor. Preventing acid pain is a key step in accurately identifying—and correctly treating—a true angina emergency.
